About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position

The principal responsibility of the Research Assistant will be to assist the High Commissioner and, at the direction of the High Commissioner, other senior officials, with research tasks, speech writing and preparation of event briefs.  Attendance at events may also be required.    The Research Assistant will be expected to develop a good understanding of current issues affecting the relationship between Australia and the United Kingdom.  The Research Assistant will also be expected to assist the High Commissioner and his staff with miscellaneous minor administrative matters.


  • Demonstrated capacity to engage in in-depth research (in particular on political, policy and historical matters).
  • A high degree of fluency in English, including good speech-writing skills, strong command of language, excellent grammar and attention to detail.
  • A thorough knowledge of contemporary Australian and UK politics and a good knowledge of Australian and UK political history.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond to tight deadlines is required.

A. Degree qualified in a relevant field.


B. In-depth knowledge of Australian politics and the ability to develop a good understanding of current issues affecting the relationship between Australia and the UK.


C. Proven ability to undertake research, keep abreast of issues and prepare written material to document findings in a logical, succinct and persuasive manner.


D. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) with a proven ability to draft speeches and briefs for senior officials.


E. Ability to take initiative, set priorities and organise work effectively and efficiently, and to complete projects and assignments with limited supervision.
