Job Description

A permanent position exists for a scientist to work in the Ultrasound and Underwater Acoustics Group within the underwater acoustics area. NPL is world-leading in this area and has a suite of dedicated facilities – open tanks, an acoustic pressure vessel and an open-water site. The main project areas are developing improved techniques for underwater acoustic calibration utilising the specialised NPL facilities, and experimental techniques for ocean acoustic measurement.

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in this specific area means that nationality, residency and security requirements are more tightly defined than others

The ideal candidate will already be well-known in the field with a demonstrated high scientific profile, have a post-graduate qualification in Physics or Acoustics or equivalent, and is likely to have at least 10 years’ experience in this area. In addition, knowledge of marine environmental acoustics would be beneficial.

The successful candidate will play a key role in providing leadership for more junior scientists, as well as representing NPL nationally and internationally, and will also be expected to prepare project proposals, including costings, and to act as technical lead for projects.

A good understanding of data analysis techniques is desirable, and experience with Matlab and/or LabView software packages would be beneficial. The ability to problem solve and propose appropriate solutions, along with an understanding of the underlying physical principles is also important. The successful candidates will have good communication skills, verbal and written, and demonstrate good practical skills with attention to detail.

Strong personal motivation, the ability to interact and network with collaborators and future customers, business awareness and an ability to work to deadlines within a team are prerequisites for the role.
